How to Record Your Skype Calls In PC+MAC+Android

How to Record Your Skype Calls

It has never been easier to keep a record of your Skype calls—both audio and video.
In the past, you had to use a third-party program, but no more: Skype now has a built-in recording feature for desktop, mobile, and web. You can record an audio or video call, and then play, pause, and scrub through the recording. That recording lasts in Skype for 30 days, but you can save it as an MP4 file to access later or share the recording.
Call recording works in Skype software for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. It’s also supported in Skype for the web, but that version is picky about its browsers—only Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge pass muster. Plenty of third-party tools can record your calls, if you prefer that route.
  • Start Recording

Open the Skype program on your computer or mobile device. Start your Skype audio or video call. After you've connected, click on the + sign or the ellipsis icon and select the Start command to begin recording.
  • Stop Recording

A message pops up on the screen to alert you and the other person that you're recording the call. When you're done with the call, click on the + sign or ellipsis icon again and select the Stop command to end the recording, or simply end the call.
  • Store Recording

After the recording has stopped, it’s stored in the chat window for you and your contact.
  • View Recording

You can now play it, pause it, or jump to a specific spot using the scrubber. The recording plays in its own video window.
  • Download Recording

Since the recording resides in Skype for a mere 30 days, you'll need to save it as a file to permanently hang onto it. With the desktop version of Skype, click on the three-dot icon at the upper-right of the recording window for more options. Click on Save to Downloads to store it in your Downloads folder. Click on Save As to house it in a different location. The file is saved as an MP4 video, even if it's an audio recording.
  • View Recorded File

To play the file from the Downloads folder, click Show in folder. Double-click the MP4 file to open it.
  • Share Recordings

To share the recording with another person, click Forward. From your list of contacts, select the person to whom you want to send the recording.
  • Delete Recordings

To delete the recording, click Remove from the menu.
  • Share and Delete Multiple Recordings

,To share or delete multiple recordings, click Select Messages. Check the circle next to each recording you wish to include. Then, click the Forward or Remove button at the bottom depending on which command you want to run.
  • Save and Share Recordings on Mobile

With the mobile Skype app, hard-press the recording. You can now save the recording to your photo library. You can also forward it to one of your Skype contacts or remove the recording. Tap Select Messages to select multiple recordings to forward or remove them in one fell swoop.
  • Start Recording on Web

Now, let’s try recording a call via Skype for the web. Open and sign into the Skype for the web page. Make an audio or video call. Click the + sign and select the option to Start Recording.
  • Stop Recording on Web

A message appears on the screen to tell you and the other person that you're recording the call. When you're finished, click the + sign again and select the command to Stop recording, or just end the call.
  • View Skype Recording on Web

After the recording has stopped, it’s stored in the chat window for you and your contact. You can now play it, pause it, or jump to a specific spot using the scrubber. The recording plays in its own video window even if it’s an audio recording.
  • Download Skype Recording on Web

Since the recording lasts for just 30 days, you'll have to save it as a file to retain it. Click the three-dot icon for More options at the upper-right of the recording window. Click on Save to Downloads to store it in your Downloads folder. Click on Save as to store it in a different location. The file is saved as an MP4 video, even if it's an audio recording.
  • Share Skype Recordings on Web

To share the recording with someone else, click the three-dot icon and select Forward. From your list of contacts, select the person to whom you want to send the recording.
  • Delete Skype Recordings on Web

To delete the recording, click Remove from the menu.
  • Share and Delete Multiple Recordings on Web

To share or delete multiple recordings, click Select Messages. Check the circle next to each recording you wish to include. Then, click the Forward or Remove button at the bottom depending on which command you wish to run.
  • Third-Party Tools

Though Skype now makes it easy to record calls, perhaps you don't want to store your chats with Microsoft's VoIP service. Read on for some third-party options.
  • Amolto Call Recorder

Amolto Call Recorder comes in two flavors: a free version that only supports Skype audio recording and a $29.99-per-user edition that adds video recording to the mix. The $29.99 option starts off with a 10-day trial so you can try before you buy.

The program is simple to use. Launch it, and it waits for a Skype call. Make or receive an audio call (or video, if you're using the paid version) and Call Recorder automatically starts recording. When the call is finished, just switch back to the program and stop the recording. You can then click on links to play the recording from the software. Your audio recordings are saved as MP3 files in the Music folder under your user profile, and your video recordings are stored as MP4 files in your Videos folder.
  • Kanda's Callnote Premium

This program is free to use and can record Skype video calls. The major restriction is that it limits you to 30 free audio and video recordings per month. If you need more, you can opt for Callnote Premium, which costs $9.95 per year after a 14-day free trial.

To record your Skype audio or video calls, connect Callnote to Skype by following the program's prompts. You can enable certain options in Callnote, such as the ability to always start recording when a call starts, notify participants that the call is being recording, and record video as well as audio. Make or receive your call, and if you chose the option to automatically start the recording, then Callnote springs into action.

After your call is finished, you can play the recording from the app or move to your Documents folder to play an audio recording as an MP3 file and a video recording as an MP4 file. You can also share or send your video recording to Dropbox, YouTube, Facebook, and other sites.
  • Record Skype Calls on Your iPhone or iPad

Finding an app in Apple's App Store to directly record a Skype video call is virtually impossible. None of the apps I initially tried did the job. I discovered some apps available outside of the App Store for jailbroken and non-jailbroken devices, but I'd be wary of them.

The only safe option I discovered was to use an app that mirrors and records the screen activity from your iPhone or iPad onto your computer via AirPlay. So you make your Skype call from your iOS device but use an application on your computer to record the video. You'll find a few apps capable of this, most of which will cost you a few dollars. Here’s one worth trying.
  • AceThinker iPhone Screen Recorder

For $39.95, AceThinker iPhone Screen Recorder will record Skype video calls mirrored on your computer. You can try the application for free for three days before deciding if you want to buy it.

After you install iPhone Screen Recorder, launch the program. Then hop onto your iPhone and iPad and swipe from the bottom of the screen to display the Control Center. Tap the icon for AirPlay Mirroring, and you should see an entry for AceThinker. Tap the AceThinker entry, and the screen of your iOS device is mirrored in the Screen Recorder program on your computer. Make the Skype call from your iPhone or iPad.

After you're connected, click the Record button in Screen Recorder. After the call is done, click the same button to stop the recording. The application then opens a File Explorer window where you can play the recording.
  • Record Skype Calls on Android

Apowersoft Screen Recorder is free, simple to use, and can record Skype audio and video calls. You can employ it to record not just Skype calls but also any screen activity on your Android phone or tablet. The app helpfully appears as a small icon on the right side of the screen from which you can start, pause, and stop a recording.

To record a Skype call, open Screen Recorder. Press the Record button and then press the link to Start Now. Your recording begins. If I started Skype first and then tried to record the conversation via the app, a message would tell me the microphone was already occupied and therefore the audio would not be recorded. So, starting the recording first seems to be the only option.

Once you're done recording, tap the Screen Recorder button and then tap the Stop button. You can play your recording from the app as well as share the recorded MP4 file via email, Google Drive, YouTube, and other sites and services.
  • DU Recorder

DU Recorder Game Screen Recorder & Video Editor works similarly to Apowersoft Screen Recorder. It's free and can record Skype audio and video calls. Launch the app, and it sits, as a small icon, on the right side of your screen. From there, you can start a recording, pause it, stop it, or segue to a screen that displays your recorded videos.

To start the recording, tap the Record button and the app displays a countdown so you know when the recording will kick off. Make your Skype call, and the video action is recorded. When you're done, tap the DU Recorder icon and then tap the Stop button. The app then takes you to a screen where you can play your recorded video.

Beyond playing your recordings in the app, you can easily download them to your PC via your browser. You can even edit your videos through the app by trimming them, adding music, cropping them, and adding subtitles. This app packs a lot into one package, so it's a handy and helpful tool for recording Skype calls as well as other screen activity.
