You've secured your Mac with a long and complex password, but that password may be difficult or challenging to type. Sure, you're prepared to enter it each time you power up your Mac, but you also have to enter it to unlock your Mac anytime it goes into Lock Mode.

You can avoid that hassle if you own an Apple Watch thanks to a feature known as Auto Unlock, which automatically unlocks your Mac's screen with your smartwatch when your computer goes into Lock Mode. You still need to enter your password when you power up or reboot your computer, but this feature can save time and effort the rest of the time.

  Hardware and Software Requirements

  First, let's go over the ground rules. To make this all work, your Apple Watch can be any series model but it must be running watchOS 3 or later. Your Mac must be a mid-2013 model or later with macOS Sierra or above. Your Apple ID must be set to use two-factor authentication (not two-step verification).

  Next, your Mac must have both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on. Your Mac and Apple Watch must both be signed into iCloud with the same Apple ID. Your Apple Watch must be protected with a passcode. And your Mac must not be using internet sharing or screen sharing.

  Check Compatibility

  To make sure your Mac is capable of Auto Unlock, click the Apple Menu icon and select About this Mac. At the About window, navigate to System Report > Network > Wi-Fi. Look for an entry for Auto Unlock in the right pane. If it says Supported, then you're good to go.

  To enable the unlock feature on your Mac, click the Apple Menu. Select System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. Click the checkbox for Allow your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac. Enter your Mac password to enable the setting.
