How to Use Apple Music on an Android Phone or Tablet
Even if you don’t have an Apple device, you can still listen to Apple Music via the company’s dedicated app. Your subscription will allow you to access 50 million songs, listen to curated radio stations and playlists, receive recommendations for artists and music, and download songs for offline listening. You just need a phone or tablet with Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or later.
Unveiled in 2015, Apple Music shot up in popularity. In February 2019, the service attracted more than 28 million US subscribers, outpacing Spotify’s 26 million for the month, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal, and Apple can thank Android users for some of those numbers. Estimates from research firm Sensor Tower indicate that Apple Music now resides on 40 million Android devices. Apple also recently updated the Android app with additional details in the Browse section so you can more easily find new music and artists. If you’re an Android user who wants to take Apple Music for a spin, now is as good a time as any.
Apple Music is available through a few different plans. An individual subscription costs $9.99 per month, a family plan runs $14.99 a month, and a plan for qualifying college students is just $4.99 a month. New subscribers can score a free three-month trial before plunking down their cash. Beyond your iOS and Android devices, you can listen to Apple Music through an Apple Watch, Apple TV, iTunes on a Windows PC or Mac, Apple HomePod, and Amazon devices such as the Echo and Fire TV.

  • Download the App

While Apple Music comes preloaded on any Apple device, Android users have to download it from the Google Play store. Open the app and tap the Try It Now button at the main screen to kick off the free trial subscription and find what you get with a subscription. At the next screen, select the plan you want, then tap the Start Trial button.
  • Your Apple ID

The next screen prompts you to use or create an Apple ID or cancel the process. If you don’t have an Apple account, tap the link to Create New Apple ID. Then follow the instructions to set up your account. Otherwise, tap the link to Use Existing Apple ID and sign in. You may also be asked to verify your payment information. Finally, agree to the terms. You’ll receive an email confirming your subscription.
  • Customizing Your Experience

A screen welcomes you to Apple Music. Tap Continue. You can now dig into Apple Music’s content and features. But let’s run through your options. First, you may want to tweak some of the settings. To do this, tap the three-dot icon in the upper right of the screen and select Settings.
  • Basic Options

The first option automatically adds songs to your music library when you add them to a playlist. The second option lets you determine if you want to download songs, stream music, update your library, or download album art over a cellular connection.
  • Audio Settings

In the Playback section, you can turn on an EQ to fine-tune your audio. Or you can set the size of a cache to temporarily store music on the device while you’re streaming it to get a smoother listening experience. This section also allows you to determine whether the songs you listen to are seen by your Apple Music followers and whether those songs influence Apple’s recommendations. Finally, you can enable content restrictions if you don’t want to hear music with explicit lyrics.
  • Browse Around

Go back to the main screen. Tap the Browse icon and scroll through selections for new albums, featured artists, updated playlists, and more.
  • Explore Music Categories

Swipe down to discover other categories of music, such as Daily Top 100, Playlists You Need to Hear, Just Updated, Hot Tracks, and New Music.
  • More to Explore

Farther down in the More to Explore section, you can browse songs by genre and mood, look through Top Charts, and view music videos.
  • Get Recommendations

If nothing in the Browse section strikes your fancy, then it’s time to recruit Apple’s recommendation algorithm. Tap the For You icon, and then tap the Get Started button. At the next screen, select your favorite music genres. Tap Next. Select your favorite artists. At this screen, you can tell the app to suggest more artists and add artists of your own. Tap Done.
  • Add Your Favorites

Browse the For You section to find songs from your favorite genres and artists as well as music based on your favorites.
  • Radio Stations

Next, let’s say you want to listen to a radio station. Tap the Radio icon. You can listen to Apple’s Beats 1 station, which features live shows and music from different DJs. Tap the thumbnail to listen to Beats 1. Tap the link for Radio Stations to view more stations based on specific genres. Tap the name of a station to queue up its music.
  • Music Just For You

To segue back to your music, tap the For You or Browse icon and select an album or song you want to hear. To download a song to listen to it offline, tap the + icon next to the song, then tap the cloud icon to download it. To download an entire album, tap the Add button next to the album’s cover art.
  • Play and Shuffle

To play the entire album, tap the Play button. To shuffle the order of the songs, tap the Shuffle button. To see more options, tap the three-dot icon for the album. Here, you can add the album to or remove it from your library, add it to a playlist, play the upcoming or previous track, create your own station out of the album, or share the album with someone else.
  • Use the Search Bar

Finally, you can always search for music by album, artist, genre, song, or even lyrics. Tap the search icon at the top of the screen. Enter your search term. From the search results, tap the song you want to play.
